Fourteenth Peer Mentor Graduation Event at Smithfield Detox

On April 17th  the team at Smithfield Peer Mentor Graduation April 2018. Three.got together to celebrate the graduation of the 14th group of Peer Mentors trained at Smithfield by Peer Mentor and Volunteer Co-ordinator Rob Floyd.

Nine trainees graduated, seven of whom already have their DBS checks in place and have made a start in their placements on the unit – the other two will follow as soon as their DBS’ have also come through.

On the day, which was attended by the trainees’ families, Smithfield clients and staff and representatives from Turning Point’s Westcliffe House, the attendees were treated to keynote speeches by two of the graduates, a short speech and presentation of certificates by Operations Manager – Jo Roberts and then music by ‘Smithfield’s own’ Donna Mutumbo and James Sewell. Donna is a long-serving Mental Health Nurse on the unit and James himself is a Senior Peer Mentor who regularly runs music groups at Smithfield and has also recently set up a scheme taking interested clients to Chetham School of Music’s free lunchtime concerts each week.Peer Mentor Graduation April 2018. After the ceremony lunch was provided by the Smithfield catering team and, as ever, an amazing cake had been made by Carepath Co-ordinator Carole Sutton’s husband Keith (who has made many cakes for the Peer Mentor Graduations over the years!)

We look forward to welcoming all the new graduates on to the unit and in to the fine Peer Mentoring tradition which has now been established in the service – the future looks in safe hands! Rob’s next cohort will begin training this summer so we hope to see you all for the next graduation later on in 2018
