Peer Mentors provide a positive role model, who can use their own experience of treatment and recovery to inspire, motivate and support individuals to become substance free.

What is peer mentor volunteering?

Peer Mentors provide a positive role model, who can use their own experience of treatment and recovery to inspire, motivate and support individuals to become substance free.

Will I get a qualification?

Turning Point offer an 8 Module Accredited Peer Mentoring Training Programme, on completion you will receive an Open Awards Certificate for the accreditation units you have achieved, which may include:

  • Developing Own Interpersonal Skills – Level 1, Credit Value 3
  • Communication Skills for Group and Teamwork – Level 1, Credit Value 3
  • Develop an awareness of Substance Misuse – Level 1, Credit Value 2
  • Introduction to Peer Support Skills – Level 1, Credit Value 2

What do I gain from being a peer mentor?

We have been told that becoming a peer mentor has dramatically improved not only the lives of the services users but the lives and recovery of the peer mentors themselves. By giving something back and learning new skills along the way you can not only support others to become substance free but also develop your own skills and personal wellbeing too.

Do I have to be completely clean?

It is essential that all applicants are free from drug or alcohol dependence/use for at least 3 months prior to attending the training programme.

Applicants may still be prescribed substitute medication. However, they need to be on a stable dose and working towards reduction/stopping their prescription

How much time do I need to give?

You need to be able to commit a minimum of 4 hours per week to peer mentoring activity and have a commitment to your own personal and professional development by attending regular supervision meetings and training as identified by your supervisor.

Do I get long term support?

Turning Point will support you to access other education, training, volunteering and employment opportunities and continue to progress in your own recovery.
