ANNUAL UK RECOVERY WALK 2018
The 10th Annual Recovery Walk, held this year in Shrewsbury, was completed by service users, peer mentors, and staff from Wakefield and Castleford Inspiring Recovery along with an estimated 5,000 people from all over the UK.
Everyone came together in Quarry Park where we were welcomed by the organisers of the event and the Mayor of Shrewsbury who thanked us for celebrating recovery in his town. The crowd took part in a warm up routine before embarking on the Recovery Walk.
The route took us along the river and through the town where the streets had been closed to traffic to accommodate the walk. As we wound our way through Shrewsbury we were greeted with claps and cheers and some bemused looks from locals. The circular walk ended back in Quarry Park where there were music bands on the stage, contemporary dance, and a choir. Marquees were propped up with information stalls, staffed by drug and alcohol services, fellowship groups, and other likeminded local service providers. Narcotics Anonymous, Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, SMART, and ACT were all hosting meetings open to anyone; we attended and participated in the recovery based activities.
Despite a slightly drizzly start, the weather cleared up and our fantastic banner, designed and made by the local recovery community remained dry and was held high in celebration of recovery.
Well done to all who attended!
Next year the Recovery Walk is in Middlesborough. We hope to see you there!
