On 26 February the Drug & Alcohol Wellbeing Service (DAWS) held an open afternoon at Acorn Hall in Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea to provide information about free support to local residents.

Over 30 people attended the event, including a couple of local councillors, speaking to a range of services including  Health TrainersBuild on Belief, the London Fire BrigadeCGL, the Volunteer Centre and many more. Service users from DAWS were also available to speak about how they got support with their issues with drugs or alcohol. Dave spoke about his experience:

“After hitting my rock bottom and realising my drinking and substance use was out of control my doctor referred me to DAWS. The staff were so welcoming, understanding and non judgemental.

It hasn’t been an easy journey. I struggled with adjusting to a clean and sober life, it was tough but all the staff at DAWS supported me and with lots of support and guidance my life is back on track. Don’t suffer in silence, just ask for help.”

Some of Turning Point’s Health Trainers also attended the open afternoon. The Health Trainers are local people specially trained to encourage others in the community to make healthier lifestyle choices, and provided health checks and advice about health and wellbeing. Nutritious refreshments were generously donated by Innocent and Sainsbury’s.

DAWS offer a wide range of advice, brief support, structured support to work with residents to address and overcome any drug and alcohol related issues and to help people improve the quality of their health and wellbeing.

The team across the three boroughs includes doctors, nurses, psychologists, recovery workers, support workers, complementary therapists, peer mentor volunteers, counsellors and trainers. There are lots of different people who can offer their support, knowledge and encouragement to help people achieve their recovery goals.

If you would like any more information or would like to make a referral contact the team on 020 8960 5599 or daws@DAWSLondon.org.
