In this story, Vasilis tells us about how DAWS has helped him in the journey to recovery. A year ago, Vasilis had lost his job and was sleeping rough, and now he’s studying, volunteering, and looking forward to a bright future clean and sober.
I had used substances from time to time throughout my youth, but everything changed when I started using crystal meth. Very quickly my usage turned to a full on addiction and my lifestyle began to deteriorate, and fast.
Things came to a head when a number of traumatic events happened in quick succession; my drug use became unmanageable, my flat caught fire, and I was made redundant from my well paid job
I soon found myself sleeping rough under the flyover in Hammersmith. I was homeless for around three weeks when No Second Night Out found me and I was taken to a hostel in Market Lane. While I was living in the hostel, I was given a leaflet about DAWS and I decided to get in touch with them.
From that point on, I have made huge strides in my recovery. I have been completely clean now for 7 months, and DAWS was instrumental in supporting this. I received 1:1 sessions with the wonderful Jacqui, was referred to the ETE service where I received amazing support from Harj who helped me to access a number of training courses in three different colleges – electrical installations, carpentry and tiling. I continue to study these subjects and am waiting to hear about funding to complete level 3 in electrical installation. In addition, I have also undertaken courses in metalwork and welding; the ETE service having sourced the funding for these.
In the space of a year, my life has improved greatly. I now volunteer at the Saturday Social Club each week, often cooking for around 20 people.
DAWS helped me turn my life in a different direction and I now feel more fulfilled, addiction free, motivated and much more self-confident. I am looking forward to finishing my various courses and starting a new career relevant to my current training.
